Indian Ringnecked Parakeets (Psittacula krameri) are a popular species among bird enthusiasts due to their vibrant colors and charming personalities. If you’re interested in breeding these parakeets, understanding their egg-laying process and the care required is essential. Here’s an overview:

 Egg Laying Process

1. Breeding Season: Typically, Indian Ringnecked Parakeets breed during the spring and early summer. In captivity, they can be conditioned to breed by adjusting light cycles and ensuring a conducive environment.

2. Nesting: Provide a suitable nesting box. These boxes should be wooden, with dimensions approximately 12x12x18 inches. Place some soft, absorbent material like wood shavings or shredded paper inside for bedding.

3. Egg Laying: A female usually lays between 3 to 6 eggs per clutch. She will lay one egg every other day until the clutch is complete.

4. Incubation: The female typically starts incubating after the second or third egg is laid. Incubation lasts about 23-28 days. During this period, ensure the environment is quiet and free from disturbances to avoid stressing the birds.

Care for Eggs and Chicks

1. Diet: Provide a nutritious diet rich in calcium and protein for the female. Good sources include cuttlebone, egg food, and a mix of fresh fruits, vegetables, and quality pellets.

2. Monitoring: Regularly but discreetly check on the nest to ensure all is well. Avoid frequent disturbances, as this can cause the female to abandon the nest.

3. Hatching: Once the eggs start hatching, the chicks are initially fed by the female with crop milk. Ensure both parents have ample food and water to support feeding.

4. Fledging: Chicks usually fledge (leave the nest) around 6-7 weeks old. They may still rely on parents for food for a few more weeks after fledging.

 General Tips

– Environment: Maintain a stable environment with temperatures around 70-80°F (21-27°C). Avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes.
– Cleanliness: Keep the cage and nesting box clean to prevent disease.
– Veterinary Care: Regular check-ups with an avian vet can ensure the health of both the parents and the chicks.

 Potential Issues

– Infertility: Sometimes, eggs may not be fertile. Candling (shining a light through the egg) can help determine if an egg is developing.
– Egg Binding: This is a serious condition where the female has difficulty laying an egg. Immediate veterinary care is needed if suspected.
– Abandonment: If the female abandons the nest, you may need to incubate the eggs artificially and hand-rear the chicks, which requires specialized knowledge and equipment.

Indian Ringnecked Parakeet. With our recent move to acreage we have been able to implement a long-standing desire of mine to successfully set up large aviaries and keep a number of pairs of large Macaws. Previous attempts at keeping birds has failed due to high levels of noise and re-location. We have set up large aviaries which have both indoor & outdoor access which allows us to manage weather extremes and the high noise levels that comes with keeping large parrots. The custom modified shed that we have designed provides the backdrop for four large aviaries housing all pairs of Macaws. Eight pairs of Blue & Gold Macaws including the jaw dropping ‘Opaline’ mutation with the interesting sex-linked mode of inheritance when considering replication & the straight forward recessive ‘Lutino’ mutation. Over the coming years we hope to replicate and further the viability of these colours which are still in their infancy in the bird hobby.
