Description
The chestnut macaw (Ara severus) is one of the largest miniature macaws. It reaches a size of about 45 cm (18 inches), of which about half is the length of the tail. It can be found throughout much of northern South America from Panama south to the Amazon in Brazil and central Bolivia. There is a wild population in Florida. Their life expectancy ranges from 30 to 80 years. The chestnut macaw is predominantly green with red and blue spots on the wings. The head has a chestnut brown spot just above the beak. The beak is black and the spots around the eyes are white with lines of small black feathers. It is the only one of the miniature asters that has feather lines in the bare spots around the eyes. Breeding
The chestnut macaw nests in a hole in a tree. The eggs are white and there are usually two or three per clutch. The female incubates the eggs for about 28 days and the chicks emerge from the nest about 70 days after hatching.
